BIGGLESWADE PLACE SHAPING, CENTRAL BEDS
At the beginning of 2020, we were engaged by the Town Council to develop a Place Shaping Strategy for this historic market town between Bedford, Cambridge and Hitchin.
With an attractive market square, river frontage and mainline train station, Biggleswade has a number of assets that support a particular sense of place and identity.
However, like the expansion of many historic settlements, it also faces a number of challenges, including congestion in central areas, permeability, edge of settlement retail/ commercial parks and urban sprawl. Unless addressed, these aspects will have a significant impact on the town’s composition and character.
Through a review of existing conditions at settlement and neighbourhood scales, we have worked with the Town Council and stakeholders to understand the nature of prevalent issues and identify potential responses, development opportunities and catalysts projects.
A visioning strategy and programme have been prepared for wider consultation and integration with the emerging Neighbourhood Plan, which will become a vital tool for coordinating growth in a sustainable manner.
